Monday Morning Quarterback

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be? I’m not talking about our appearance. I’m sure most of us wish we could run faster, bench more, have more hair, or whatever. I’m thinking more about our inward character. What is one character flaw you wish you could change? Losing it with your wife? Your kids? Being lazy at work? Not doing enough ministry?

“And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” (Genesis 2:2 ESV)

Most of us do not rest well. And not just at night, not just when we try to sleep and can’t. In general. Most of us do not know how to vacation, to...

The following is a statement delivered to the congregation of the First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 5, addressing the Decision of the United States Supreme Court to legalize same sex marriage.

Before we pray, I want to preface our study with a brief reflection on the decision by the Supreme Court of the United States legalizing same sex marriage in all 50 states. It is...

Monday Morning Quarterback

One author tells the story of reading about a couple from the Midwest who were caught in a deadly tornado. The fatal twister came upon the couple and their small baby suddenly. Realizing they had no time to take cover, they laid their child on the floor and covered her with their bodies. After the storm passed, rescue workers began the gut-wrenching task of sorting through the wreckage...

Monday Morning Quarterback

A number of years ago, my wife and I had a fellow minister and his wife over for dinner. While we were enjoying our meal, the doorbell rang. When we opened the door, two Mormon missionaries greeted us. My friend and I began to engage them in conversation, asking them about their beliefs. Quite obviously, these two eager young men had paid attention in their training, rattling off...

Monday Morning Quarterback

It had a flavor of its own, an extemporaneousness which gave it something of the quality of a vast, happy village party as people wandered about, sat, sang, and slept against a slimmer background of trees, grass, flowers, and water.”

These were the words of novelist Mollie Panter-Downes, a British writer...

To the Congregation of First Presbyterian Church

I am writing on behalf of the nine-person Pulpit Search Committee: Ned Currie, Beverly Harmon, Paul Hurst, Laura Husband, Ben Roberson, Jerry Shivers, Bill Stone, Danny Story and myself. The Committee is very excited about our unanimous recommendation to you to call David Strain as the next senior minister of First Presbyterian Church.

Last night, First Presbyterian Church of Jackson hosted the 29th Annual Mid-South Men’s Rally. With just under 1000 men from all over Mississippi, Tennessee, Louisiana, Alabama, and beyond,  it was a great night full of biblical preaching,  thunderous hymn-singing, and warm fellowship. Most significantly, we were treated to two stirring expositions from God’s Word by the Rev. Sandy Willson, Senior Minister of Second Presbyterian Church in Memphis, TN.

1 Thessalonians 5:25

25 Brothers, pray for us.

2 Corinthians 1:11-12

11 You also must help us by prayer,

so that many will give thanks on our behalf for the blessing granted us through the prayers of many.

                  12 For...

After Exile

In tandem with our sermon series from the Book of Zechariah on Lord’s Day Evenings, we will be doing a series of short blog posts on the Post-Exilic Prophets, giving a brief introduction to some of their themes and messages. But for now, how about a brief introduction to this obscure little section of the Old Testament called the Post-Exilic Prophets? For starters, what in the world do...
