Adult Sunday School

We offer a range of Adult Sunday School classes for those college-aged through senior adults, divided according to age groups. These classes offer not only a weekly Bible lesson but also a place to fellowship, learn, and grow with a smaller gathering of the church body in a focused way. Sunday Schools at First Presbyterian Church provide a supportive, ministry-minded community for members and visitors. To that end, each class also has the opportunity to support and participate in specific outreach projects and ministries.

Classes are taught by leaders in the church, who present lessons on scripture or life-application topics. Our teachers rotate quarterly, so the teaching and focus of lessons changes every three months.

Classes

College Class
Location: M123 A Main Building
This class is open to all undergraduate college students – whether studying in the Jackson area or at home for a visit with family. FPC believes that involvement in a local church is important for college students, so we want to provide a “home away from home” for students studying in the area. We want to serve as a source of spiritual stability – both for students who have moved to Jackson for college and for our church’s covenant children who are visiting home from their respective colleges. More info about the College ministry at FPC.

Young Adults Class
Age: 20s
Location: Patterson Hall
The Young Adults Sunday School is a class intended to welcome Jackson area young adults into the life of the church at First Presbyterian and connect them to each other. Our Sunday School hour involves fellowship and often food, but it is centered upon the study of God’s Word as we seek to display the grace and glory of the Lord through the Scriptures. We love to welcome new young adults, see them grow in their faith, and build meaningful friendships through this Sunday school. More info about the Young Adults ministry at FPC.

Lost and Found
Age: Late 20s – Early 30s
Location: Study Center 310
The Lost and Found Sunday School class was founded in Summer 2022 by an enthusiastic group of singles and newlyweds. We want to glorify God by cultivating our hearts, minds, and actions to be more Christ-like. We do this by memorizing scripture together, learning the Westminster Shorter Catechism, showing hospitality to Sunday School members and guests, and by opening each Sunday School by singing hymns of praise to God. The Class diligently seeks opportunities to serve each other and our community and is developing ideas for service projects for the coming year.

Light House Class
Age: Late 20s – Early 30s
Location: Study Center 313
Lighthouse started in 2016 with a group of members who didn’t “fit” anywhere, but desired to be together in fellowship while cultivating lasting friendships. Lighthouse is primarily comprised of members in their late 20s and early 30s, with and without children. Our goal is to learn and walk through life with a community. We look forward to you visiting us soon!

Providence Class
Age: 30s – 40s
Location: Study Center 314
The Providence Sunday School Class is a group of 30s and 40s, singles and marrieds, with children of all ages or none at all. We love to sit under the Word and laugh together. With potlucks at the Sumrall family farm, an annual grown-ups Christmas party, regular mens and women’s prayer nights, and other times together, we seek to be knit together into a community who suffers together, serves together, and runs the race together. Come see us! We love new faces!

Salt & Light Class
Age: 30s – 40s
Location: Study Center 211
The Salt and Light Sunday School Class was founded in 2009 by a group of engaged and newlywed couples. The name Salt and Light was inspired by Matthew 5:13-16. We want to glorify our Father in Heaven by being salt and light for our church community and the world around us. What began as a handful of young couples has “matured” into a group of families with children preschool through junior high. We have loved supporting one another through joys and trials over the years and we delight in welcoming new faces to our group.

Cornerstone Class
Age: 40s – 50s
Location: Miller Hall 203
Cornerstone class began in the late 90’s as a newly married and engaged couples’ class. Through the years the members’ families have grown to include children whose ages range from elementary to grown and married! Christ is our head and chief cornerstone, and we want the class to feel like a small family within the larger body of the church. We support and pray for one another regularly through grief and joy and invite all to join us.

Stewards Class
Age: 40s – Early 50s
Location: Study Center 213
The Stewards Sunday School Class was founded in 1990. Most members are now parents of children from junior high to married; we even have a few grandparents! The Stewards class members share one another’s burdens and encourage one another to be good “stewards” of our God-given time and talents. “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10) Throughout these 30+ years, this class has enjoyed true Christian fellowship with our longtime members and new members alike.

Covenant Class
Age: 50s – 70s
Location: Westminster Hall 202
Covenant Class was begun in the early 1980s by the late Denny Terry and his wife Judy, and from the beginning has comprised an eclectic mix of ages, church backgrounds, vocations, educational experiences, and family histories…our common bond, the cross of Christ. Some members have met together almost from the beginning; others have joined over the years; all are welcome. We have known the joy of new births, the sorrow of death, shared successes, failures, and burdens, and we have laughed, mourned, cried, prayed, and learned together. Quarterly topics range from in-depth Scripture studies to discussions of current topics of interest from a thoughtful Christian perspective. Discussion is encouraged, and we always ask our teachers to leave time for comments and questions.

Life Learners Class
Age: 50s – Early 60s
Location: Study Center 210
Life Learners Sunday School class began in 1984, when a group of young newlyweds and engaged couples came together to form a new class. For most of the first decade this class was taught by ruling elder Jim Moore. He and his wife, Betty, poured their hearts and wisdom into these young families. We Life Learners are still learning together as we welcome new members, and as we support, love, and pray for one another through the ups and downs of life. We thank God for our elderly parents, pray for our adult children, and enjoy the blessings of our young grandchildren.

Pilgrims Class
Age: 50s – 60s
Location: Westminster Hall 204
The Pilgrims Sunday School class is an eclectic group representing various ages and stages of life. The class was formed over twenty years ago by several people from larger classes who expressed a desire for a smaller setting in which they could share prayer concerns, have verbal participation during lessons, and enjoy fellowship with other believers. The name ‘Pilgrims’ was chosen as it seemed to reflect our perspective of ‘passing through this life’ on route to Glory with Christ. This journey of life is indeed one of joy and sorrow, yet with hope. Our fellowship intends to encourage and support one another along that journey, and we welcome anyone who cares to join us!

Lamplighters Class
Age: Late 50s – 60s
Location: Miller Hall 205A
The Lamplighters Class was founded in the 1980s. The class that began as newlywed couples in their twenties has grown together for 35 years and is now a class full of grandparents in their 60s. Teachers usually rotate each quarter, and new members and visitors are always welcome.

Young Seekers Class
Age: 60s – 70s+
Location: Miller Hall 205B
The Young Seekers class was formed in the early 70s by a group of young married couples seeking a closer relationship with our Heavenly Father. The class is still going strong with an average Sunday attendance of 60+. Many of the early founders are still attending, however no one fits the “young” description anymore with the age range running between 60 and 80.

Ladies Bible Class
Age: All Ages
Location: Parlor
Jesus Christ is the same, yesterday, today, and forever. Following years of tradition of having women’s SS classes, First Ladies is a class made up of women of all ages and stages of life – single, married, widowed, working, homemakers, retired. The Bible is our textbook and fellowship is our bond in Christ. We are sharing together how to live for Christ in a changing world. We have a rotation of experienced women teachers. Women helping women to grow in grace. Come join us!

Special Friends Class
Age: All Ages
Location: M 120
The Special Friends class began in 1985 and is one of the happiest places at First Pres! Our amazing members have different kinds of gifts and abilities as well as disabilities. We welcome those who benefit from being in a classroom with others with special needs ranging in age from 9-years old to adult. We have music, Bible time, prayer, love, and laughter during Sunday school and also have fun times outside of class! The leaders in this class seek to minister to members of this class as well as their families, and we love new members! More info about accessibility at FPC.
