At FPC we believe that work matters and work matters to God. The Faith and Work luncheon series exists to heal the disjunction between Christian theology and our Monday-Friday jobs. We will explore the Gospel’s unique power to affirm, renew, and change the way we view our work and the way we work.
A marriage is like a garden. It takes skill, attention, time, and an enormous amount of work in order to bear fruit. Without a healthy root system, no plant and no marriage will thrive. As followers of Christ, our roots are in union with Him. Yet, the reality of our union with Christ doesn’t automatically transform our marriage – we’re changed as we learn to consciously and actively live within that reality. So whether you’ve been married for 5 days or 50 years, there’s “gardening” to be done; because as long as we are east of Eden, we’ll deal with thorns, thistles, and weeds in our marriages. For 8 weeks, we’ll look at practical skills that grow out of this theological foundation for marriage, and learn together to cultivate healthy marriages in union with Christ.
Art is a way to know the world and ourselves. It is more than something to look at or listen to. It is a way to see and hear. The arts explore light and color, beauty and sorrow, mystery and monstrosity. In the arts we are helped to know ourselves, and in the arts we are reminded we are made to know God. But what are we to make of recent trends in visual art? What can engaging the arts well teach us, whether we are creative or not, about ourselves and our world?
In this series we will explore the warrant and value of the arts in a Christian worldview. We will learn to ask some basic questions about great works of art that can help us appreciate and engage with the ideas they embody. And we will learn to find in the arts an opportunity to talk about some of the ultimate questions of life.
