WIC • Women In the Church

Women with Hearts for God
2005-2006

Women In the Church (WIC) is a ministry of First Presbyterian Church which purposes to unite and encourage women as they seek to know and apply the teachings of Jesus Christ in all areas of life. The WIC is open to all women regardless of age or marital or professional status and provides a variety of opportunities for spiritual growth, service, and fellowship.
This program is not designed to make busy women busier. It is merely a "menu" from which to choose opportunities that fit the various gifts and interests in the different stages of a woman’s life.    It serves to encourage women to use their gifts within the church community to which God has called them.
The WIC desires to encourage women in their personal communion with God, as well as with one another.

2 Corinthians
"Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death.  But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead."                                                 2Corinthians 1:9

2 Corinthians reads more like a diary than a public document.  It tells about certain events in Paul's life that are recorded nowhere else.  In no other letter does Paul so openly admit his frustrations over personal hardships so difficult that he "despaired even of life." He summarizes his state as "hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed." (4:8-9)  This book reveals these problems, but it also reveals Paul as a tenacious man of faith.  2 Corinthians is filled with profound words God gave to Paul on such topics as suffering, giving, and personal ministry.  Two chief themes run through this book: divine comfort and encouragement in the midst of suffering and troubles; and God's strength manifested in human weakness.

Hebrews
"How shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation."
                                                           Hebrews 2:3

You can go through much of life deliberately avoiding hard decisions.  But sometimes you have no choice; the situation forces you to make a decision.  The author of Hebrews wrote to people who faced just such a decision.  At that time new converts were being thrown out of Jewish temples, tossed into jail, and even tortured. Subject to suffering and shame for their confession of Jesus, and stripped of the familiar and visible institutions of organized Jewish religion, the readers are tempted to turn away from the faith.  The author exhorts them to persevere in the pilgrimage of faith, and his exhortation is grounded in the author's proof that Jesus is better than the Old Testament laws, sacrifices, priests, and even angels.  Unlike the earlier external aspects of Judaism, Jesus sanctifies our hearts so that we draw near to God with clean consciences.  He links us inseparably with the God of grace.

1 John

"Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth." 1 John 1:18

John wrote this letter to people who were already Christians, outlining how that faith should affect a person's life.  In this book, John chooses key words and points back to the truths behind the words.  Repeatedly he begins with the phrase, "If we claim..." and proceeds to show what actions must result if we claim to live in the true light and know God.  For example, God is light, he says; so walk in the light.  He is spirit; so worship Him in the proper spirit.  He is love; so demonstrate that love to others.  In every case, John shows what a life committed to God should look like, and he shows God as the source of power in the Christian life.  This book reminds us that Christian virtues are only real when put into action.

Women with Hearts for
Service

"As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another,
as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."

I Peter 4:10

SERVING OUR SENIORS:
•Golden Circle -

monthly visitation of our ladies in nursing homes or who are shut-ins.
Crowns of Splendor -
This ministry can involve the whole family.  Members meet at several designed times to make "happies" to share with our ladies who are shut-ins or nursing home residents.
• PROS -
members of this committee plan and prepare a monthly meal and program for FPC retired members

SERVING OUR MISSIONARIES:
• Crafts for Missions - members meet at several designated times to have fellowship and make a Christmas ornament for each of our approximately 150 FPC missionary families.

SERVING OUR COMMUNITY:
• Women in Need - This ministry of God’s love and forgiveness to the women of the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility offers two levels of involvement: filling and delivering Christmas boxes and mentoring. The mentoring program occurs monthly.
• Sew and Sow - This ministry provides comfort to parents who have lost an infant, by providing handmade garments and blankets to a local hospital.

SERVING OUR LOCAL BODY OF CHRIST:
Helping Hearts and Hands - members take turns weekly assisting one of our blind members with grocery shopping or brief errands. Another aspect of this ministry involves churchwide workdays to assist those in our congregation needing small jobs done around the house or yard.
Caring - members respond to the ill, bereaved, and caregivers of our congregation.
• Cooks Who Care - participants in this ministry help to stock a freezer at the church with food that serves as a "safety net" for church members in need due to illness or bereavement.
College Ministry - members of this ministry "adopt" our FPC college students, sending encouraging notes and praying for their needs.
• New Member Hospitality - each quarter at FPC our newest church members are honored with a luncheon at the church. Those involved in this ministry take turns contacting new members, helping to prepare the luncheon food, following up with new members, and greeting at WIC events.

SERVING INTERNATIONALS:
FORTS -
members join in a ministry of prayer and encouragement for the Friends of Reformed Theological Seminary (FORTS). The FORTS students are a group of internationals and their families who are studying at RTS.
